“One of the group said ‘oh look it’s a junkie coming’.

"The accused then replied ‘look at all these wee weans – I’m so scared’ and he began shouting and swearing.

“The accused started to approach the children, he was swinging his arms about so the witness moved to the side to let him by. At this time the accused swung his right arm out, hitting the witnesses right leg above his knee.

“The witnesses saw the accused walk in the direction of the canal bridge, so they entered the Tesco store, told someone about the incident and police were called.”

Sheriff Derek Livingston noted Waugh’s previous offences.

William McIntyre, defence solicitor, said: “It involved six children from Braes High School. They called him a junkie and he walked passed them swinging his arms, accidentally on purpose.

“It was just a glancing blow – a group of six cheeky school children.”

Sheriff Livingston fined Waugh £335 to be paid back at £80 per month.
