Police targeting bogus callers

Forth Valley police are launching a new operation to tackle bogus callers and rogue traders.

Doorstep crime will be the main focus of Operation Monarda, launched nationally, in a bid to reduce the number of people who fall victim to con men in their own homes.

Vulnerable groups such as the elderly are regularly targeted by callous crooks and police are urging communities to be vigilant and look out for older and vulnerable neighbours.

Local officers highlighted a recent case in Denny where a vulnerable elderly couple with health issues, including Alzheimer’s, were contacted by a company offering funeral services.

Bank details were given to a ‘salesperson’ but before it went further a care worker for the couple alerted police to the scam.

Inspector Cheryle Cowan, of Falkirk Police Station, said: “Thankfully we managed to intervene and gave the couple some prevention advice, as well as making contact with their bank to stop any potential transactions.

“Local officers also met with the couple at their home, so on this occasion the incident didn’t escalate. However we’re urging people to be vigilant to these types of crimes.

“If you have been a victim of this type of crime, don’t be embarrassed to come to us. We will do all we can to support you, to bring the perpetrators to justice, and prevent others falling victim.”
