Police were called in after concerns were raised by one of the deputy returning officers involved with the running of last Thursday’s EU Referendum.

Officers watched closely as ballot boxes, believed to contain the suspect votes, were opened during the counting process at Grangemouth Sports Complex.

A police spokesperson said: “Police Scotland received two separate reports of possible personation from the deputy returning officer for the Falkirk area on Thursday night.

“Officers are currently working with Falkirk Council to establish if a criminal offence has been committed.”

Personation is where an individual votes as someone else either by post or in person at a polling station, as an elector or as a proxy.

This offence applies if the person that is being personated is living, dead or fictitious.
