Police in Falkirk warn domestic abuse not tolerated

The coronavirus epidemic will not make any difference to the way cases of domestic abuse are dealt with, police have warned.

The message comes at the same time as figures showing that nearly 1700 offences have been recorded under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act since it was launched a year ago.

A spokesperson said: “No-one should live in fear of abuse. Abusers be warned, we investigate all reports of abuse and you will face the consequences of all of your abusive behaviours.

“Domestic abuse is not just physical, violent abuse, it includes verbal, sexual, psychological or financial abuse.

“It is about power and control, with abusers using controlling behaviours to frighten, humiliate and isolate victims from those who can offer them support.

“During this time of uncertainty, as we manage the challenges presented by #Coronavirus our response to domestic abuse remains unchanged.

“Our officers will continue to work to prevent harm by identifying people who may be at risk of domestic abuse”.

Anyone who is suffering abuse, or who knows somebody at risk, is urged to call police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Victims who need support are asked to contact the domestic abuse and forced marriage hotline on 0800 027 1234, where help is available 24/7.
