The threatened boycott of a new court by local lawyers has been backed by a Central Scotland Labour MSP.
Siobhan McMahon has written to Justice Secretary Michael Matheson claiming their decision not to represent clients at Edinburgh’s Sheriff Appeal Court because they will not be paid enough is the right one.
She has called for the decision by the SNP Government to make further cuts to legal aid rates to be reviewed.
Ms McMahon said: “I’m deeply concerned these changes are going to put people in Falkirk at a real disadvantage.
“I find it absurd that under the new arrangement judges, police officers and lawyers for the prosecution will receive 2015 rates of pay for attending the Sheriff Appeals Court while those in court standing up for the appellant shall only receive 1992 rates of pay. It’s simply unacceptable.”
