The would-be thief disturbed the residents of the property in Roebuck Park during the early hours of yesterday morning and they kept watch on the man as they called the police.

They saw him attempt to get into a neighbour’s car then head on to Main Street where he tried the handle of a van which was parked in a driveway.

The police dog handler then arrived on the scene and a 34-year-old man was arrested while inside the van.

He was kept in custody to appear at court today.

A police spokesman said: ‘‘This man was caught due to the diligence of the residents of Roebuck Park and the information they quickly passed to police. It was excellent work by our local community.’’
