Knife man returns to violent ways behind bars

A thug who was jailed for brutally stabbing his girlfriend in the neck has now violently assaulted a fellow inmate.

Terry Newlands (23) was initially sentenced to six years and nine months in prison at the High Court in Aberdeen back in 2015 for attempted murder. High on drugs, Newlands repeatedly stabbed his partner in the neck, just missing her jugular.

Now he has been at it again, this time punching and repeatedly kicking a fallen prisoner in Polmont Young Offenders Institution (YOI).

Appearing from custody at Falkirk Sheriff Court today, Newlands, from Dingwall in Ross-shire, admitted the assault he committed at the YOI on August 1 last year.

Susan Campbell, procurator fiscal depute, said the incident occurred at 11.40am while prisoners were out of their cells.

She added: “There was an argument between them, and the accused punched the other inmate on the head, causing him to be felled across the floor. Then he repeatedly kicked him as he lay on the ground until he was pulled off.”

Imposing an extra six months of custody for the offence, Sheriff Craig Caldwell said: “This was clearly a serious assault on another inmate, and it is particularly aggravated by the fact that you kicked him.”
