Hospital dash after insulin drama in flat

A diabetic who laughed as he injected his girlfriend with his emergency supply of insulin has been spared jail.

Andrew McKay (32) jabbed his insulin pen into Kelly McCallum’s bare upper leg, shooting the potentially-deadly medication into her system, during a blazing row in her flat.

Falkirk Sheriff Court heard last Thursday that police called to the property in Shieldhill found her suffering from plummeting blood-sugar levels as the diabetes control hormone took effect.

Kelly (32), was rushed to hospital and saved by being put on a glucose drip.

But the court was told she could have died – or suffered permanent brain damage as a result of the shock incident in April 2014.

Procurator Adrian Fraser said: “He went to see her and she suspected he was consuming alcohol he wasn’t supposed to have due to mental health issues at the time. An argument developed and he injected her with his insulin pen. He injected her for a laugh and thought he was being funny.”

Mr Fraser said: “According to medical opinion had she not received treatment her blood sugar levels could have plummeted further, potentially leading to seizure and, if prolonged, chronic neurological damage or even death.”

Sheriff John Mundy placed McKay, from Nisbet Drive in Denny, on an 18 month supervised community payback order with 250 hours unpaid work.

He said: “I could send you to prison for a long time, but wonder what that would achieve. There is no question this is a serious case. If it wasn’t for medical intervention, this lady could have died.”
