Grangemouth shoplifter caught pocketing coffee

Eagle-eyed store staff clocked a serial shoplifter sticking a jar of coffee and other goods into his pockets before leaving the shop without paying for them.

Simon Mather (41) failed to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court last Thursday, but had earlier pleaded guilty to theft of grocery items from Spar, Jamieson Avenue, Bo’ness on May 9, last year.

Procurator fiscal depute Nhabeela Ruhmatullah said: “The accused attended at the store and was walking around selecting items from the displays, putting a jar of coffee in his pocket. After lifting various other items and concealing them, he left the store.”

The court heard the value of goods stolen totalled £10.57.

Sheriff Derek Livingston noted Mather, 13 Kingseat Avenue, Grangemouth, had “quite a record for shoplifting”.

He fined him £200 to be paid back at a rate of £50 per month and ordered him to pay £20 compensation to the Spar store.
