John Robinson (49), Lumley Street, Grangemouth, drove to the woman’s home while she was out at work, after initially appearing to accept her decision to end the relationship the previous evening.

At 2pm on Wednesday, July 29, one of his former partner’s neighbours heard “considerable banging” coming from her housing association home in Seaforth Road, Falkirk and saw Robinson breaking panes.

Another passer-by heard the smashing of glass and also saw Robinson throwing the hammer at the front windscreen of the woman’s red Citroen C1 Vibe before getting into a black Ford Fiesta and driving away.

When Robinson was arrested he told officers: “I can't remember doing it, but I did smash her windaes.”

Appearing at Falkirk Sheriff Court last Friday, Robinson had previously pled guilty to domestically aggravated criminal damage. Procurator fiscal depute Catherine Fraser said a total of nine panes were smashed by Robinson, including the bedroom windows of the woman’s children, the windows of a back bedroom, the living room and the back door – causing £1000 worth of damage.

The windscreen of the Citroen was cracked, causing a further £100 worth of damage.

The court heard Robinson earlier made a 999 call to police alleging his former partner had taken away some of his medication when she left, before saying he no longer required police assistance and would take matters into his own hands.

Lynn Swan, defence solicitor, said: "He is unemployed, he suffers from pancreatitis, asthma, COPD, mental health issues, stress, anxiety, and diabetes, and he is on an almost endless list of medications.

“Until this, he had been out of trouble for 15 years.”

Sheriff Keith O'Mahony ordered Robinson to pay £100 compensation to his former partner, and £1000 to her landlords Link Housing for the windows.
