Ian Glaister (36), of Low Moss Prison, Bisshopbriggs, appeared from custody via video link at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Thursday having admitted assaulting and robbing a 75-year-old woman on the A907 Stirling Road, Alloa on March 2.

He seized the bag she was carrying, causing her to fall to the ground and strike her head on the pavement to her injury, before stealing her money and bank cards.

The court heard Glaister, who had been in custody since July 14, did not recall much about the offence because he was under the influence of heroin and Valium at the time.

It was stated the former serviceman, who suffers from PTSD following tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, had taken a “downward turn” prior to this incident after losing his job and was stopped from seeing his daughter.

He supposedly went to purchase drugs a couple of days before the assault with the intention of taking his own life.

His defence solicitor said: “This clearly did not go to plan and he ended up under the influence of a number of drugs.”

Glaister was said to have written a letter of apology to the victim of his assault and wished to have someone pass it to her.

He also said he had come into a £30,000 inheritance and would be able to pay compensation to the victim.

Sheriff Derek Hamilton imposed a 12 month prison sentence on Glaister back dated to October 27.
