Falkirk Council now has powers to enforce coronavirus legislation on businesses

Falkirk Council’s environmental health and trading standards officers now have powers to enforce the new legislation that stops some businesses from opening and ensures social distancing is in place for those still trading.

Businesses that don’t comply may be given advice or an informal warning – and officers are authorised to serve prohibition notices on businesses that continue to flout the laws.

Members of the public are urged to report businesses that are flouting the new rules to the council.Councillor Laura Murtagh, spokesperson for Public Protection said: “Protecting public health is of crucial importance to keep our communities safe during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We are working in partnership with Police Scotland to offer support and advice to businesses during this time to ensure social distancing guidelines are adhered to across our business community.

“If any member of the public has any concerns that social distancing arrangements are not being followed within business premises or indeed a business is operating when restrictions mean it should be closed, they should contact the Council who will investigate any issues raised.

“This will relieve some pressure on Police Scotland, who continue to enforce gatherings and movements of individuals although they may assist with urgent complaints about businesses outwith normal working hours.”
