At Falkirk Sheriff Court last Thursday the 43-year-old’s behaviour was described as “bizarre”.

The court was told the couple had been drinking in their home at 18 Ash Grove, Westquarter, on the afternoon of June 13.

When she went upstairs for a some ‘peace and quiet’ he went out and came back around half an hour later “extremely intoxicated”, pointed a ‘cap gun’ at her and pulled the trigger.

After Stevenson placed it under her pillow saying “this will keep you safe” she called the police who arrested him after finding a knife with a nine-inch blade tucked into his trousers.

Stevenson admitted having the knife and behaving in a threatening manner by pointing the imitation firearm at his partner.

His lawyer said: “His recollection of events is a bit hazy. There was a disagreement about the Brexit vote given both were on different sides of the debate, but putting the gun under the pillow was completely irrational.”

Sheriff Derek Livingston placed Stevenson on a supervised 18 month community order with 135 hours unpaid work to be done in six months.

He told him: “Your behaviour was bizarre as well as criminal and a serious matter.”
