Ross Bourne (30), of Dennyloanhead, was being arrested for threatening three terrified teens in a town park with a plank when he became “immediately aggressive” as officers moved to put him in a police van.

Falkirk Sheriff Court heard he threatened to fight with the police and spat in PC Eric Wilson's face as the officer was placing him in the van.

The court was told that when the police van arrived at Falkirk Police Station, Bourne was assessed by the custody nurse and “freely admitted he had made up that he'd got Covid in an attempt to wind up PC Wilson”.

The court heard that the incident which led to Bourne's arrest began at 12.06am on May 30, when three teenagers hanging out in North Broomage Park in Larbert were approached by the “heavily intoxicated” accused.

When they tried to walk away, he followed them along adjacent Graham Avenue, “waving a plank of wood”, which was later found abandoned nearby.

The court was told that all three teenagers – aged 15, 16 and 17 respectively – were “frightened” and the police were called.

Bourne, who appeared on Tuesday by video link from Low Moss Prison, pleaded guilty to police assault and using threatening and abusive behaviour.

Frazer McCready, defending, said his client had been high on drink and drugs.

Mr McCready said: “He had consumed a large quantity of alcohol and had taken at least five street valium.

“With that lethal combination of alcohol and illicit substances he has absolutely no recollection of what happened. He offers his apologies for his outrageous conduct.”

Imposing the 18-month jail term, Sheriff Christopher Shead said: “I'm satisfied a custodial sentence is appropriate.”
