Denny man tried to steal £70 of goods from Tesco

Thomas Monaghan (59) pinched cosmetics, food and a jewellery gift set from a Tesco store but staff spotted his thieving and all the items were recovered.

Appearing at Falkirk Sheriff Court last Thursday, Monaghan had pleaded guilty to the theft he committed at Tesco, Central Retail Park, Falkirk on March 5 last year.

Defence solicitor Murray Aitken said: “He’s 59-years-old and should know better.”

He added: “Unfortunately, at the time he was struggling with drugs and had taken Valium on this occasion. He can’t remember much about the circumstances because of the state he was in.

“He was spotted by staff.”

The court was told Monaghan, whose address was listed in the court papers as 82 Duke Street, Denny, was now living as a “recluse” in Bo’ness.

Sheriff Christopher Shead placed him on a restriction of liberty order to stay in his home from 7pm to 7am for the next three months.
