Dad of M9 crash victim John Yuill is suing Police Scotland

Gordon Yuill (54), of Camelon, says he wants accountability over their failure to respond to a message reporting his son John Yuill and partner Lamara Bell’s smash, which occurred on July 5, 2015.

John and Lamara died after his Renault Clio hurtled off the M9 motorway near Stirling and crashed into a wooded area. The couple lay trapped and undiscovered in the smashed vehicle at the foot of an embankment for three days despite a 101 call coming in about the incident.

John (28) died at the scene and Lamara (25) died in hospital four days after the car was found.

My Yuill said he and his family were “aggrieved” by what happened in the aftermath of the tragedy and his fight for compensation was not about the money, it was about holding people accountable for what the family suffered as a result of the police not responding to the initial emergency call.

He added the publicity surrounding the accident and the subsequent investigation into the matter had taken its toll on his family.

Mr Yuill’s legal action was lodged earlier this month at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

Police Scotland made no comment on the matter, stating it would be inappropriate to say anything on a matter that is now before the courts.

This new bid for compensation comes three years after Lamara Bell’s family instructed lawyers to sue Police Scotland.

Law firm Digby Brown said in September 2015 they expected to win multiple compensation payouts from the force for the trauma suffered by Lamara’s loved ones after the mum of two died following the accident and that case was lodged at the Court of Session last year.
