Contractors call on Grangemouth residents to help them curb park vandalism

Vandalism continues to plague a historic public park which is in the process of undergoing a multi-million pound makeover.

Grangemouth’s Zetland Park, which recently received a further £192,000 of funding from the National Lottery Heritage to allow its massive regeneration project to move forward, fell victim to mindless vandals yet again when the rose garden’s decorative wheelbarrow, put in place in September last year, was smashed and left in the mud.

A few days before that contractors KOMPAN Scotland, who are currently working on Zetland Park’s new all inclusive play area, had one of their dump trucks stolen and abandoned in the nearby Grange Burn.

Earlier in the year a portable toilet at the site was set on fire and damaged.

Now KOMPAN has taken measures to prevent the vandalism, with the introduction of a Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) device which monitors and detects any form of intrusion inside the perimeter of the site.

It is also asking residents and park users to remain vigilant.

In a post on its Facebook page, Zetland Park Regeneration Project stated “On Monday night our play park site was broken into and a dumper was stolen. This dumper was found abandoned in the Grange Burn at the south end of the park.

“We and our contractors KOMPAN Scotland take issues of anti-social behavior, vandalism and theft very seriously. Increased on-site security measures are being implemented and we are working with Police Scotland to identify the culprits.

“We're trying our best to implement massive improvements to the park and its facilities but we need your help to make this happen. We would like to appeal to Portonians to be vigilant when in the park and to report any anti-social or suspicious behaviour to Police Scotland via 101.

“If you have any information that might assist with Police inquiries please call Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 664 of January 26."

Last summer the rose garden suffered through an incident of major vandalism when a £600 cherry tree – planted by a group of hard working volunteers – was ring-barked, which effectively killed it off.
