Ann Orr, procurator fiscal depute, said: “The accused was taken to the police station and the indicated he had consumed diazepam so he was taken to hospital to be assessed. From the time he arrived at 3am he was aggressive, shouting and swearing, demanding to be seen and repeatedly made threats to damage property.

“He continued to shout and swear in order to get the attention of medical staff. He told one of the officers ‘I will punch him when he is not in uniform in a dark alley – I’ve got one of the largest travelling families in Scotland.”

Defence solicitor Simon Hutchison said: “He was abusing a significant amount of substances and had no consideration for his own health. He was misbehaving there’s no doubt about that.

“It was outrageous behaviour but he’s moved on from that.”

Sheriff Derek Hamilton said: “People in the hospital could do without people like you shouting and swearing and abusing everyone.

He sent Reid to prison for two months and placed him on a two-year supervised community payback order to run upon his release.
