Call for probe into M9 crash backed

Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie MSP has been told by the new Lord Advocate he expects a Fatal Accident Inquiry into the M9 crash that killed a Falkirk couple to be held.

In a letter to the politician, James Wolffe QC, who replaced Frank Mulholland QC as Scotland’s top law enforcer in May, has shared the view of his predecessor it would be “inconceivable” that an FAI will not go ahead given the public concern over the accident last July.

Mr Rennie claims only a full FAI will help insure the families of tragic victims Lamara Bell and John Yuill get all the answers they need over police failures that may have contributed to their deaths.

Mr Rennie said: “The fact the new Lord Advocate holds the same view as his predecessor is welcome. This will ensure no stone is left unturned as we seek the answers we need.

“An FAI is the best way to ensure the circumstances that led to the crash and the failure to respond are fully understood. The families deserve nothing less.

“The new Lord Advocate must do all he can to ensure the investigation proceeds as quickly as possible so an FAI can begin as soon as possible. Further delays are the last thing we want to see.”
