Defence solicitor Simon Hutchison said: “He has a serious issue with alcohol and drinks litres of it a day. He has been able to detox while in custody.”

Sheriff Derek Hamilton said: “I’m not going to grant bail. A warrant had to be taken to secure his attendance and he has failed to turn up for court before. He has been shoplifting all year.”

The case was continued until December 15 for reports.
