William Craig (34) appeared at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Thursday having admitted assaulting a paramedic and a female police officer and possessing a knife in Langton Road, Westquarter on March 16. He then breached his subsequent curfew on October 8.

He had also pled guilty to behaving in a threatening manner and smashing windows in Calder Place, Hallglen, and and damaging several motor vehicles in Beauly Court, Hallglen on June 10, 2019.

Sarah Smith, procurator fiscal depute, said: “Relatives of accused returned to their address and the accused was there. He had been drinking and appeared to be in a bad mood and began to act aggressively.

“The witnesses tried to remain in different rooms away from the accused. Then after midnight they heard extremely loud banging and thumping within the property. The accused then kicked and burst open the bedroom door.

“He began to throw items belonging to the witness around and shouting at her. She was extremely frightened by his behaviour and contacted police, but he left before officers arrived.

“She told police she didn’t want the accused in her property. Officers found the accused within the local area and told him not to return to the property. Police then returned the house keys the accused had given them to the witness.”

However, Craig’s drunken rage had not quite subsided and he returned to the address some time later, smashing two living room windows.

In the hours before Craig returned to the address to smash the windows he found himself in Beauly Court and began to wallop parked cars which belonged to people he did not even know.

The procurator fiscal depute said: “The witness heard banging noises and saw the accused running off from the front of the address in the direction of Calder Place.

“His car had been damaged and his girlfriend’s car had been damaged. The windscreen had been smashed and there was blood smeared all over it. The rear window was smashed and there were a large number of dents in the body work.”

It was nine months later when Craig came to the attention of police again.

Ambulance staff received a call about a male lying the middle of the road with a head injury. Craig was intoxicated and hostile. Blood was coming from a wound in his head but he refused treatment.

When paramedics helped him up they noticed he had a knife – with a three inch blade – on his person. His brother arrived and took the knife away to “ensure everyone’s safety”.

Craig then became aggressive, attempted to punch a paramedic and then kicked a female police officer. He also spat on another officer.

Placed on a 7pm to 7am curfew, Craig turned up at Falkirk Police Station at 1.20am a few months later, supposedly handing himself in for an offence. Police officers said they were not looking for him for anything, but on checking they discovered he was in breach of his curfew.

Sheriff Derek Livingston said: “Quite clearly here there is no alternative but a custodial sentence.”

He sentenced Craig, 4 Icehouse Brae, Laurieston, to 435 days in prison.
