A highly-respected consultant has retired from Strathcarron Hospice after almost 20 years.

Dr Fiona Downs has been instrumental in the development of the facility’s clinical services and began the development of the Palliative Care Team in the NHS Forth Valley.

Dr Downs has also served on local and national committees, and in recent years was the driving force and principal author of the Forth Valley Palliative Care Manual which won the NHS Forth Valley Celebrating Success award in 2008.

She said: “There are a lot of wonderful and dedicated people at Strathcarron Hospice, and I will miss the staff and the volunteers. I think Strathcarron is a wonderful place which the community has always supported.

“It’s always been important to me to communicate with patients and their families so they understand what’s going on. I think it’s important to live for whatever time you have and keep achieving goals, and also help relatives savour that time. Over the years, I have learned so much from patients and their families.”

Irene McKie, CEO at Strathcarron Hospice said: “Fiona has been absolutely instrumental in developing specialist palliative care in Forth Valley. She has shown huge commitment and has absolutely embraced everything a hospice should be. She’ll be greatly missed.”
