The self-employed television engineer (59) set himself the challenge of walking the West Highland Way before his 60th birthday – and at the same time raise money for the Sarcoma UK cancer charity.

The charity has been close to Andrew and his children Jenna and Gary since the heartbreak of losing his wife and their mother Linda to the disease at the age of just 54 in 2013.

Last month he hit both targets and collected over £2000 from generous sponsors for the effort.

Andrew, Gary (25) and nephew Michael Scobbie (23) set off on April 23 to tackle the 96 miles from Milngavie just outside Glasgow to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands in just six days.

The trio set a determined pace, averaging 17 miles a day through countryside that included Mugdock Country Park, Glen Falloch, Etive Mor, Glencoe and the Devil’s Staircase to the official finishing line at Gordon Square in the famous Highland town.

Andrew, from Pentland Way in Grangemouth, said: “We had a schedule and managed to reach the B&B most nights on time! We’re grateful to all the people who supported the Just Giving Page we put on Facebook. They’ve helped raise a fantastic sum for Sarcoma UK who helped us through a difficult time.”
