Butchers have winning pie formula

Two local butchers had a tasty start to 2016 by winning awards at this year's World's Scotch Pie Championships.

Thomas Johnston of Cow Wynd in Falkirk won a diamond award for its sausage roll and a bronze award for its mince bridie, while Richards, of Charlotte Dundas Court in Grangemouth took gold for its scotch pie.

The competition, which is now in its 17th year, attracted a record number of entries, with 100 butchers and bakers entering over 500 pies, pasties, sausage rolls, bridies and savouries.

Supported by Scottish Bakers, the competition’s awards luncheon took place in Cumbernauld last Wednesday, presented by Carol Smillie.

Alan Clarke, of Scottish Bakers said “Once again we have brought together the best pies and baked goods in the land and today we can really celebrate the achievement of our hard working butchers and bakers.

“My heartfelt congratulations go to our winners, and everyone taking away a prize.”
