WH Smith staff have informed customers their Grangemouth store will be closing in under a month’s time.
It has been a bad year for Grangemouth town centre, with the high profile closure of the Tesco store in Talbot Street and Mathiesons shutting its doors in La Porte Precinct at the start of 2015.
Now with Cashino, located at the Bo’ness Road end of the town centre, shutting up shop and no confirmation of any businesses moving into the still vacant former Tesco store, things look bleak even before WH Smith leaves La Port Precinct with another empty premises on September 2.
The closure of WH Smith’s had been on the cards for a long time, but The Falkirk Herald received confirmation back in April the premises would be closing in September.
Now the sign placed on the door of the store gives customers the final countdown to the exact time of closure.
It states: “This store will be closing on Wednesday, September 2 at 2pm. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The sign then states the nearest WH Smith is located in the Thistle Centre in Stirling – ignoring the much closer branch in Falkirk High Street.
WH Smith had not made any comment on this oversight as The Falkirk Herald went to press.
News of Cashino’s departure and the impending closure of WH Smith come as support is growing for a resident-led clean up campaign of the town centre which is also planned to take place in the first week of September.
