New figures show Falkirk is helping keep Scotland on track to exceed its annual target for starting modern apprentices.

Skills Development Scotland revealed there were 19,517 modern apprenticeship starts in the country up to the third quarter of 2014/15 and, with 693 starts in the Falkirk area alone over that period, the forecast is for the Scottish Government to exceed its target of 25,000 by the end of the year.

Falkirk East MSP Angus MacDonald said: “These very welcome figures are testament to the Scottish Government’s commitment to investing in youth employment, creating almost 100,000 new apprenticeship opportunities over the last four years.

“Apprentices play a key role in the Scottish Government’s efforts to promote youth employment. These figures are further evidence of the real results being achieved for young people.

“With more economic powers in Scotland’s hands rather than Westminster’s we could give more young people the opportunities they deserve.”
