Last year Laurel Allen (3), of Mamre Drive, California, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of cancer which affects the retina, and has been combating tumours in both her eyes ever since.

In order to save her life she is undergoing an operation in Birmingham Children’s Hospital this week to remove her right eye.

Laurel’s fighting spirit and the love and support she receives from brothers Logan (5) and Lucas (6) has now been recognised by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT), which named them all CHECT Champions.

Proud mum Laura said: “Laurel faces all her treatment and hospital visits with a smile on her face. She amazes us with her determination to just get on and enjoy life.

“Ever since Laurel was first diagnosed the boys have had to stay with relatives because we’ve had to spend so much time away in Birmingham. They’ve never once complained. Logan includes his sister in everything and Lucas always tries to make her laugh.

“They have done us proud.”
