Two adventurous friends are in Peru this week to celebrate a milestone birthday and raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Local women Denise Laird and Gill Winters aim to conquer the magnificent Inca Trail to Machu Picchu to raise money for Strathcarron Hospice and mark their 50th birthdays in style.
They have already raised £8000 between them and been featured in the national press for a very unusual training tactic.
Denise and Gill trekked up and down three flights of stairs at Falkirk Stadium during the first half of the Hearts game last month.
It took them 40 minutes to climb the 3024 steps to prepare them for the final day of their challenge when they will walk through the Sun Gate into the 15th Century ruins.
Denise, from Larbert said: “We’ve done a lot of fundraising over the years, like the Tiara Walk for Strathcarron and the Great North Run, but wanted to do something for our 50ths and wanted to go to the Southern Hemisphere to do it.
“The thing about this challenge is the high altitude and heat. We fly in at 10,000 feet, have a day to acclimatise and then walk the Inca Trial at 8500 feet. I am excited, and Gill is nervous!”
