Banknock date for major conference on Roman wall

Academics will converge on Banknock this month for a unique conference about the heritage of the Antonine Wall - right after Falkirk and district's annual Big Roman Week.

Organised by the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project the free event on September 29 will see a range of speakers talk about the famous World Heritage Site, and will include a guided tour of key stretches of the ancient frontier barrier.

Community groups and a number of councils will gather to review plans to enhance and build on the wall’s international importance as the one-time final frontier of the Roman Empire.

Last year the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded £97,000 to the project, and a range of improvements were planned, including

a series of arts/performance events designed and delivered by local communities, and the recruiting of a “21st century Legion” to help promote the Antonine Wall in local areas.

The event will take place at Glenskirlie House and Castle in Banknock.

Registration is from 9,15am (conference starts 10am), with optional tours and afternoon workshops running until 5pm. Optional tours and afternoon

Meanwhile the Big Roman Week events in and around Falkirk start on Saturday next week at Kinneil House in Bo’ness - reckoned a great family day out - followed by events and displays at libraries and museums across Falkirk Council area, themed walks along the route of the Antonine Wall, a talk in Bo’ness library on recent archaeological research, and more.

The Antonine Wall is Scotland’s most important Roman monument and in 2008 was inscribed as a World Heritage Site.
