Resolutions are made, and usually broken, as we stop doing this and cut down on that ... and what about these unwanted pounds?

While it is a very personal quest to find fitness and health, which we see as key components in our happiness, it is a common goal.

And understandably so. After all, we are told that obesity levels are on the increase across the country and that Scotland is the “sick man of Europe”, and that remains a puzzle. We have one of the best health services in the world, yet our health record is grim.

Much of that –poor housing, social deprivation, health inequalities etc – is down to issues that are being addressed by government, but we all have a part to play.

We can help make improvements to our lives by making a personal positive change in 2016.

That’s why we’re launching our ‘Shape up for life’ campaign at the start of February.

Each month we will be inviting our readers, and those of our sister newspapers across Scotland, to take that first step in ringing in new lifestyle changes – for good.

There are tiny steps we can all take that will make a massive difference – whether it is eating healthily, improving our fitness or simply taking more time for ourselves away from the stresses of everyday life – we just have to make that first move.

So join us throughout 2016 so we can ring in the changes and make a big difference to our lifestyles in 2017!

As we begin this journey we are asking you to tell us your stories of the changes you are putting in place and how you feel about the differences they are making. Keep a record of the ‘then and now’ moments and our editorial teams will do the same.

We are not asking you to transform into international athletes but just to take more time for yourself, to care about your health and wellbeing, and those around you.

You deserve it, wherever you are on life’s path. And who knows, by embarking on this journey together, the “sick man of Europe” might just start to look and feel a little better by the end of the year.

Put yourself first this year

Throughout 2016 we’ll bring you a series of features that will offer tips, advice and contacts on every aspect of improving your health, fitness and wellbeing. From your own personal ‘MoT’, through diet, exercise, weight loss, alternate health therapies and lifestyle changes, this could be the year you’ll remember that made future resolutions redundant.
