Upstairs, downstairs at impressive Falkirk home...

To call this beautiful property in Arnothill a ‘maisonette’ is accurate enough – but it hardly does justice to its elegance and spaciousness.

A stunning conversion from one of Falkirk’s grandest houses, built around 1860, the two-storey apartment created is one that current owners Joanne and Wallace Aitken fell in love with when they bought it eight years ago.

Joanne said: “What attracted us was the sheer size and space of all the rooms.

“Our grandchildren have loved playing in here.

“It’s been a very grand house in its day. The hallways are big enough for the children to play in”

“I love the high ceilings and every room has double aspect windows, which means we have fantastic views.

“On one side we can see right across to the Ochils; on the other the high park; and we can even tell the time from the Steeple clock through one window.

“I could sit at one window forever and just watch the birds in the trees.”

“We also like the fact we can walk into town and go to a restaurant or property.”

One of the few changes the couple have made was remodelling the kitchen so their large family can be accommodated round the table when they get together.

“It’s a great house for guests. The ground floor can be a self-contained place in its own right.

“It has a bathroom and the third bedroom, so it’s great for guests. We use it as a second sitting room, but it’s a good guest room too.”

The house has been carefully converted to make the most of its original features and its former owners refurbished the stunning staircase.

The lounge was originally the grand house’s drawing room and the original plasterwork is still intact – and still beautiful.

Being in a conservation area, changes have to be minimal and this apartment retains the grand main door entrance.

It also has four bathrooms, due to the way the house was divided.

The terraced garden is big enough to enjoy a sociable afternoon in the sun, with a patio area to enjoy the greenery that surrounds it.

Joanne admits it will be a huge wrench to leave.

She said: “It’s a lovely house – we’ve loved living in it and it’s been a very difficult decision to leave, but retirement is approaching so we feel we need a more ‘lock-up-and-leave’ property.”
