Ian Scott’s article about the famous McCowan’s sweet factory in Stenhousemuir a few weeks ago brought back some nostalgic memories for one of our readers.

Anne Paterson from Grangemouth was reminded of another factory which produced tasty confections in the same town for many years – McNicol’s.

Anne said: “My father, Peter Cochrane, worked for McNicol’s whose factory was at the top of Muirhead Road in a building formerly a school I believe.

“It was still in operation in the 1940s and as a child then I well remember the ‘rejects’ being left on the window ledge and we children could help ourselves.

“My father eventually left McNicol’s and went to work at McCowans before setting up his own wholesale confectionary business.”
