A STAFF nurse has been giving the decks a massive dose of house to produce some heartstopping dancefloor beats.

Heather Sloan (26), from Larbert, works long shifts at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but most weekends she can still be found administering to the musical needs of clubbers around Central Scotland.

Her particular groove is tech house and she regularly plays Hummingbird in Glasgow.

She said: “Sloan is my DJ name. I bought my first set of decks when I was 18, but I’ve only taken it up seriously over the last couple of years, actually doing it outside my bedroom.

“It can be quite stressful at times, but really it’s like you are going on a night out. Your feet hurt a lot after a shift though – I can’t wear heels now when I’m DJ-ing.”

Nursing colleagues might be confused by Heather’s second surname, but her second career is really taking off in a big way after her success in Full Stop’s recent battle of the DJs competition.

More than 30 DJs took part in the contest, including some professional disc manipulators who have residencies at places like The Arches in Glasgow. However, Heather’s talent stood out for the judges and Full Stop owner, and DJ, John McLean and the top prize eventually came her way.

The newly crowned DJ champ will play a prominent part in the Lint Riggs venue’s Muusika House Conference - three nights of pounding sound that will feature some faces familiar to Falkirk’s dancefloor denizens.

John, who also owns 20 Rocks in Princes Street, said: “It’s going to be massive – the whole town will be descending on Full Stop and Heather’s prize means she will be playing on all three nights.

“We are also doing a legends night with DJs from the past - guys people will recognise from nights at the Martell, the Canteen and other venues from years gone by.

“The last night like this had us closing the doors at 9.30 p.m. there were so many people at it.

There will be a total of 36 DJs over the weekend and I will be doing a spot too – it’s a real mix of older guys and new talent like Heather.”

The event starts tomorrow (Friday) and runs over Saturday and Sunday with headliners including Electro Enemy and the Old School DJs.
