Follow the footprints in this former farm

This beautiful converted steading offers a peaceful, rural retreat that’s just three miles from Falkirk High station and prime commuter territory.

Avon Brook Steadings is a group of just five homes that have been carefully converted from the former Rottenstocks Farm, following the exact footprint of the existing farm buildings.

The result is a home that is full of charm and plenty of character but also light, airy and spacious.

Current owners Adrian and Lynn Grieve did not know the farm in its former life but, says Adrian, they have had many positive comments since moving in eight years ago about how much of the original character has been retained.

“Some parts of the houses are covered in rendering and some are stone – and that is the original stone from the farm,” says Adrian.

The couple fell in love with the house when they first saw the beautiful sitting room, which has full-length windows and patio doors that open out on to the back garden and allow the room to be bathed in natural light.

“I love the fact that it is a lovely bright room in the summer but feels really cosy in the winter, as we put in a wood burning stove,” said Adrian.

They also feel it’s a safe place for a growing family. Since moving in, they have had two children and with just under half an acre of ground – overlooking nothing but fields – they have found it to be a perfect environment for the children to grow and thrive in.

The large kitchen, which easily accommodates a dining table, also has French doors that lead onto the lovely decking area, a space where the family enjoy spending time appreciating the stunning views and the peace and quiet that the location brings.

South-facing, the terrace attracts the sun well into the evening.

They also have a room the family use as a dining room but it could easily be used as a ground floor bedroom. For a while, they used it as a playroom for their young children, so there is flexibility.

Upstairs are another three bedrooms, one of which has an en-suite shower room and a walk-in wardrobe.

The family is having to move because of work commitments, but Adrian said: “If we could pack the house up and take it with us, we would. We really love the house and we’ll miss it.

“We’ll really miss the neighbours too – we all get on really well.”
