Burgers are happy meals for two!

After several recommendations, we finally made our way along the coast to St Andrews to try out Rascals Bar.

Situated right next door to the New PictureHouse cinema on North Street, it’s dead easy to find with lots of parking right outside (there are stairs to the restaurant however).

It was a Monday night, so the place was pretty quiet, apart from a few students and a group of golfers who had obviously heard the great reviews as well.

Nice and light, with TVs (showing the football, boo!) and comfy booths, it has a really relaxed feel.

It’s famous for its burgers, and boy-oh-boy are there a lot to choose from.

As well as a whopping 17 concoctions that they have devised themselves, including the Ranch, The 2am, The Sloppy Rascal and the Hobo, you can also create your own, with more than 20 toppings and dips to choose from.

And of course, if you’re not in the mood for a burger, there’s a great selection of other mains too, including hot dogs, fish and chips,
macaroni cheese and sausage and mash.

After a long, long stare at the menu (mouth salivating within two minutes) I decided that I would forgo a starter and head right into the main with a burger of my own choosing – a classic beef burger with chilli con carne and bacon on the top.

My dining partner was intrigued by the pizza fries, one of a number of topped fries options on the starters column, alongside soup of the day, chicken wings and chicken goujons. The pizza fries are basically big fat chips with mozzarella, pepperoni and pizza sauce baked onto the top.

I don’t eat cheese, so he had them all to himself, and given the nearly all-clean plate, alongside his Wingin’ It burger – a burger with hot sauce boneless chicken wings, cheddar and blue cheese dip – I’d say they were a hit.

My burger was absolutely delicious, and I raved about it for days.

The meat was cooked
perfectly, the chilli had just the right amount of spice, and the bacon wasn’t too fatty. Both meals were nice and hot when they were brought out on normal plates; none of that slate or chopping board business!

Having saved some room (unlike my dining partner who gave out little ‘‘I’m so full’’ groans for the next few hours) I treated myself to a dessert, opting for the classic hot chocolate fudge cake and ice cream.

It’s my absolute favourite, and this cake didn’t disappoint. Full marks for it actually being hot (so often it’s advertised that way and yet comes out cold from the fridge) and it was so rich and chocolatey that I couldn’t actually finish the whole thing.

We left happy and full, and with a bill for around £30, including drinks, which I’d say was pretty reasonable.

The service we received was brilliant and the food was top notch. I would absolutely recommend this place.
