While driving tests resumed in Scotland in September, test centre waiting rooms have remained closed since the first national lockdown in an effort to reduce contact between people and reduce the risk of transmitting Covid-19.

The first wave of centres to reopen waiting rooms in Scotland and England were chosen because of their location and ease with which they could be made Covid-secure.

The second wave means more centres across a large swathe of Scotland can now offer waiting facilities for learner drivers and their instructors.

Candidates due to sit their test at one of the affected centres will receive an email detailing the steps taken to make the facilities Covid-safe and instructions on how to use the waiting rooms. These come on top of the existing guidelines on attending a practical driving test.

Among the measures implemented are requirements for candidates to wear a face covering at all times inside the waiting rooms, to sign in via a QR code or physical paper log, and to wipe down touch points when they enter and leave the waiting area.

A spokesperson for the DVSA said: “We understand that [candidates] may be disappointed if [their] local test centre remains closed.

“The safety of candidates and our staff is a priority and we are working to safely open up other waiting rooms around the country.”
