When the Bruce family first moved to this five-bedroomed former farmhouse 17 years ago, they knew exactly what they wanted.
As both had busy jobs in business, they knew Hardilands Farm would be the perfect retreat to come home to.
It’s rural setting and stunning, open views which stretch for miles over to the Ochils meant it provided an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, but it is also conveniently very close to the motorway network.
These days, its location has the added bonus of being close enough to the Kelpies for an evening stroll.
They also needed it to be family home and Jan Bruce says it has certainly served its purpose.
“I’ve always found the rooms are very flexible – it’s ideal for a family home!”
Having brought their children up here, Jan says it has been a very happy family home. The children, however, are now grown up, and the couple are planning to take off and do some travelling.
The old farmhouse dates back to “probably before the turn of the century”, the family believes, and contains many original features, including the coombed ceilings, which really give the house a farmhouse feel.
However, the Bruces have always made sure it has been brought up to modern standards by consistently maintaining and improving it over the years.
It now has new windows, although they have kept the look of the old farmhouse windows and the character and charm of the house has never been compromised.
It’s also a welcoming home and the enormous kitchen, which is very much the heart of the home, is the perfect venue for friends and family to gather, while there is also a formal dinging room as well as a utility room the size of many a kitchen.
All of the rooms are big – the master bedroom’s luxury en-suite is stunning and the two large family bathrooms are beautifully finished.
The bright, spacious sitting room is also a favourite spot for guests to gather.
Its French doors lead out to the lovely garden. This lush, mature space has actually been cleverly designed to be as low maintenance as possible, while it has an abundance of shrubs and plants for interest.
It is, says Jan, full of “little sun spots” to catch the rays all day if you choose.
If anyone is interested in buying more land, that could be negotiated separately as there is also a three-bedroom cottage and more land that the couple would consider selling.
