Nostalgia 1996: Mariners’ get chance to defend their OVD Junior Cup title

Camelon Juniors have done it again ... the magnificent Mariners are in the final of the OVD Scottish Junior Cup for the second year in a row.

Camelon secured their place in the final by beating Pollok 4-3 on penalties at Love Street, Paisley, on Monday night.

The current cup holders will now face Tayport on May 12 at Fir Park in Motherwell ... the scene of last year’s triumph when The Mariners defeated Whitburn 2-0 to win the Junior Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Goalkeeper Alan Banner was the toast of Camelon when he brilliantly saved Pollok’s third spot kick, as was Derek Haston, whose penalty proved the winner.

A crowd of 3951 watched the match and, by the end of the night, it was the Camelon faithful who were singing.

Camelon boss George Fairley, who took over from his brother, Brian, at the start of the season, was understandably jubilant.

He told The Falkirk Herald: ‘‘It is a fabulous achievement.

‘‘I feel really proud that we’ve done it again because everybody wants to beat the cup holders, so to get back in the final is brilliant.

‘‘To be honest we didn’t play very well!’’
