As long ago as 1779 – the year which saw the casting of the first carronades at Carron Iron Works – the ironmongery business of Gillespie and Main was established.

The business therefore has centuries of service to the Falkirk public behind it but, like all successful concerns, it has never rested on its laurels but consistently followed a policy of taking full advantage of developing ideas.

The latest example of this is the wonderful transformation which has been wrought within recent weeks in Gillespie and Main’s shop at Callendar Riggs, Falkirk – a change which has been planned to make shopping easier and more convenient for the public.

It has been achieved by gutting it internally and replanning to achieve more space for the effective display of the truly amazing range of articles which the shop stocks.

New owner Mr W. H. Smith, who took over earlier this year, said: “Our aim is to continue the policy which has satisfied the customers of Gillespie and Main in the past but we are also determined that we will give the public a much better service than they have ever experienced in the past.
