Some 2,764,607 million people have received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in Scotland and 993,180 have had their second dose, the Scottish Government said.

The figures came as UK Government statistics showed that more than half of the population of the UK has now had a first dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

Experts have said vaccines should be able to control the pandemic as they published new real-world UK data showing that jabs slash infection and are likely to cut transmission.

Just one dose of either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine leads to a two-thirds drop in cases and is 74% effective against symptomatic infection.
