Planning permission has been granted to open Sal’s Famous Pizzeria, a shop inspired by New York’s traditional neighbourhood pizzerias.

Plans for the unit at 11 Kirk Wynd, Falkirk, show that it will be a ‘slice shop’ with a fast turnaround of customers, rather than a formal Italian restaurant, and pizza slices will be sold loose to take away, or to eat on-site at limited window seating.

The unit was formerly Habaneros which closed suddenly last year.

Colin Green, who made the application, also owns the Vicar Street bar North Star, which currently offers a pizza delivery service although this is expected to transfer to the new shop.

Two objections were received from neighbours worried about possible noise and smells and concerned that the new business would undo the work of the Townscape Heritage Initiative which upgraded several properties in the area.

Planning permission was granted with officers saying they felt the frontage would be sympathetic to the heritage area and having an occupied unit would enhance the town centre.

They also said problems with odours were not anticipated and any should be reported to the council’s Environmental Protection Unit.
