Kim Boath opened up the doors of Salon 34 in August to a stream of customers new and old who trusted the hairdresser to take care of their first professional cut for months.

The Cow Wynd business has since welcomed back many of those clients – a sign for Kim that her decision to set up shop on her own has been vindicated.

Branching out and and trying her hand at management was a scary thought, she admits, prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the Maddiston woman adjusted her mindset as businesses across the country were ordered to close by the government and vowed to take the next step as soon as she possibly could.

Kim explained: “In lockdown I felt I needed to give myself a push to do what I wanted to do.

“Before, I was frightened to do it. After lockdown I thought ‘If I don’t do it now will I really push myself to do it?’

“It’s my first experience of going off on my own. It’s just myself and an apprentice, Shannyn Pepper.”

The opportunity came about by chance when Kim was scrolling through a raffle page on Facebook.

Having spotted an advert for the job, she immediately set her sights on landing the role.

Now responsible for tending to a steady stream of customers, Kim is glad she put herself forward.

She added: “It’s been busy but I think it’s because the old owner, Henry, had a lot of clientele.

“We’ve had quite a lot of new clients coming in too. I think more people are coming in over fears of lockdown happening again.”

Salon 34 is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
