Once operational, the facility – which will use ingredients like ethanol produced at the firm’s Grangemouth plant – hopes to produce as many as one million hand sanitiser bottles every month.

The Middlesbrough factory – and another facility to be created in Germany – will supply hospitals with products free of charge.

As well as making hand sanitisers for medical and care services across the UK and Europe, Ineos expects to make “pocket bottle” sizes for individual use.
