Local branches, including Ronades Road, Carron and Links Road, Bo’ness, will be paying a £200 a one-off bonus to staff, cleaners, warehouse staff and customer assistants, while office staff will receive £100.

Lidl said the gesture will cost the company £5.5 million in total.

Christian Hartnagel, Lidl chief executive, said: “It has been an extremely challenging period and our teams have done a phenomenal job in helping to keep the nation fed. I am incredibly proud of the dedication and commitment our colleagues have shown and continue to show and this payment is about recognising their unrelenting hard work and thanking each individual for the important part they've played in the year like no other.”

Lidl paid staff a similar bonus last March, just as the pandemic hit, handing out £150 each to workers.
