Struggling Falkirk Cancer Research shop appeals for volunteers

The town’s Cancer Research UK branch has lost six volunteers, and is struggling to process all of the stock it has.

Management hopes anyone with time to spare will lend a helping hand and, in turn, help out an organisation which, like many charities, is expected to lose huge sums of research funding due to the coronavirus pandemic.

David Cummings, who runs the Vicar Street store, said: “We’re short on bodies.

“We’ve lost volunteers which does have a massive impact on processing the stock.

“There’s a natural backlog, but the shop is fast, fun and furious, especially now with everything we’re going through.

“It’s even faster, more fun and more furious! There’s never nothing to do.

“The organisation is forecasted to lose hundreds of millions of £s in research as a charity. We’ve had scientists made redundant which is heartbreaking because they’re the ones who are able to continue the research.

“Every penny we can generate is going to make a huge difference. For that to be the case, we’ll need bodies.

“I’m looking for people who are prepared to process the stock upstairs where the hub usually is.

“It’s a great wee shop. I’ve been here for 15 years and there’s never a dull moment.”

Although times are tough, support for the shop has never been in short supply from Falkirk residents and businesses.

Johnston’s Bar Bistro is one of the latest to have handed over a substantial sum.

The restaurant has been donating 10p from every hot drink it sells to Cancer Research UK and staff last month presented their local branch with a cheque for £1120.

With Johnston’s annual Stand Up To Cancer music night and bake sale cancelled this year, owner Chris Johnston was delighted to make a donation to a charity “close to our hearts”.

Mr Cummings added: “I can’t thank Chris enough for what he’s done for us over the past five years. It’s a great business he has.”
