Administrators began a wind-down of its UK operation and chains remained open for in-store and online trading prior to January’s coronavirus lockdown.

The Howgate Shopping Centre branch has remained close since the retail industry was forced into another coronavirus lockdown at the turn of the year.

All of Debenhams’ stores – including its branch in The Thistles Shopping Centre in Stirling – are set to close by May 15.

Indicating the timeline for national closures, a spokeswoman said: “Debenhams’ stores will start to close permanently from May 2, with the stock clearance completed and final stores expected to close by May 15.

“The closing date for each store will depend on the stock clearance.”
