Three Falkirk youngsters beat off competition from hundreds of others to get parts in a production of ‘Annie’.
Seven-year-old Carla Kirkland from Slamannan and Grangemouth twins Ava and Carmen Judge (6) are preparing to wow the audience at Glasgow’s Pavillion Theatre later this month in the Apollo Players production of the much-loved musical.
Carla is playing the role of Molly, Annie’s best friend, with Ava and Carmen taking on the roles of orphans.
And joining the trio on stage will be the twins mum Nadine McKenzie playing Miss Hannigan.
Nadine, who runs McKechnie School of Dance in Grangemouth, said: “It’s a real family affair!
“The girls and Carla have been friends since they were babies so it’s lovely that we are all involved.”
The twins have been taking part in Apollo Players productions since they were four, and when Carla, a primary three pupil at Slamannan Primary, watched them in ‘Peter Pan’ last year, she began pestering mum Alison to join.
Alison said: “As soon as we left the show, she was desperate to give it a go herself. Carla is just so confident and has been going to dance classes since she was two-and-a-half so nothing fazes her.
“We took her along to the audition in Glasgow but there were so many kids there we didn’t think she would be selected so when we found out she had a lead role her dad and I were thrilled.
“She dances, has solo lines and sings a few lines of songs on her own so it’s a challenging role for a seven-year-old but she is just loving being part of the show.”
The girls are three of the youngest members of the cast and have been impressing older performers with their professionalism. The rehearsals are intense, with up to four scheduled each week through in Glasgow, however, Nadine says they have taken it in their stride.
“The girls are always dying to go to the rehearsals, they just love being on stage.
“When they heard the next Apollo Players show was ‘Annie’ they just went hyper. It’s their favourite musical and so were very keen to get parts.
“I haven’t performed myself for a long time, being a mum and running the theatre school just takes up so much time, so I wouldn never have dreamed of auditioning for a part but the director, John Carlise, asked me to give it a go.
“I’m thrilled to be playing Miss Hannigan, it’s a fabulous role with a great dance scene and some cracking songs.
“And getting to take part in such a professional production with the girls has been a great experience.
“I think we are all just chomping at the bit to actually get on stage and perform.”
‘Annie’ is on at the Pavillion Theatre in Glasgow from September 25-29, tickets are available by calling 0141 332 1846.
