Denny High is home to Britain’s best three junior canoeists.

Sophie and Rebecca Ogilvie and Leone Glackin occupied the top slots for junior under-13s as their kayaking season ended at the end of last month.

The trio, all members of CR Cats club based in Alva, are not just close in terms of ability - they grew up together in the same class at Head of Muir primary school.

“We compete against eachother as well as the other people, it’s like a friendly rivallry,” said Sophie who is ranked top ahead of Leone in second and twin sister Rebecca in third.

The three are also ranked second, third and fourth in the age-group above.

“We know eachother well and when I see my sister in the hosue the day before an event we’ll tell eachother we’re going to beat them - but it’s important too because we push eachother on and try to keep up with eachother,” added Rebecca. “When we started taster sessions at primary school, we never thought we’d get this far.”

Leone added: “On the water inr aces we look out for eachother because we are the same club and know eachother well - but in competition you never know what can happen.”

CR Cats coach John Brown told The Falkirk Herald the girls were “very committed”.

“They are fortunate because in this sport, the ‘pursuit of excellence’ is the norm.

“The coaching support for young canoe slalomists in the Central region is recognised throughout the UK as being among the best.

“Only four of the races from the 15 are in Scotland so the girls are all over the place, in England and Wales competing. They have very supportive parents who help them.”

In the final weekend trip of the year - on the River Dee in Wales, Leone was second in Girls canoe slalom and kayak at under-14, but won the under-12 and under-13 kayak events.

Fellow CR Cats Laura Milne, Peter Linksted, Aiden Waters and Michael Brown won their C1 categories and Jonny Dockson took first in the under-12 kayaks.
