Azami judo club is home to Falkirk’s own Fab Four.

But it’s nothing to do with the Beatles, it’s beat-INGS they’re giving out – on the judo mat – and they’re being recognised for them too.

Liam Young, Scott Miller, Hayden Murray and Gary Miller all took medals for the Hallglen-based club at Clyde Judo event in Renfrewshire..

Gary Miller was first in the under-66 kilo category. Scott Miller and Hayden Murray took silver medals and Liam Young was third in under-55 kg.

Also at the meeting were judokas from Dennyloanhead. Josh Ryan won one of the yellow belt heats and Josh Brown also came top in two red belt pools.

Harry Kemp came second in the Boys’ under-30kg A-grade competition.

And there is more belt success for Falkirk JKA karate association as Grant Cieslar, Louise Gibson, Claire Oliver and Nadim Gibson all gained 9th Kyu.

They’re on the way to the top in their game, but some of Falkirk’s taekwondo players are approaching the peak competition.

Four members of Central Taekwondo Academy have been selected for the National GB Development programme.

Jordyn Smith (10), from Carronshore, and Naomi Strathie (13). from Falkirk, successfully came through a two-day trial and were selected for the Team GB cadet squad.

Both Jordyn and Naomi will return to Manchester, where the trials were held, to training camps with the best of British fighters in the sport.

The same will apply to Asia Bailey and Kristian Kinnon, both 14 year old Larbert High School pupils, who did similar for the junior age-group.

As well as the Falkirk four, World Champion Sarah Stevenson, who recently received an MBE in the New Year Honours List, will be training in Manchester.

Central Academy Chief Instructor, Master David Bailey, told The Falkirk Herald: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters to be involved in Taekwondo at the highest level.

“They will be training with the Team GB Olympic coaches and have access to all the support staff, physios and psychologists.

“It is a tremendous achievement, but also a tremendous commitment and it will be very hard work but I know they have the potential to go all the way.

“I am really proud to have four of my students in the GB Squad. It raises the profile of Taekwondo in Scotland and it is great for Central Academy.”

This month and next, Central will be represented at competitions in Sweden, Germany, Holland and Belgium.
