Nine points from three games is must for Stenhousemuir
Stenhousemuir need to make it three wins out of three in their remaining league matches if they are to stand an outside chance of reaching the promotion play-offs.
That’s the view of assistant boss Kevin McGoldrick as his players gear up for yet another must-win fixture.
The Warriors 2-0 victory away to Dumbarton gave them the right to still label themselves play-off hopefuls - but they still face a tough task if they want to end the season in the top four.
Next up on their win-or-bust promotion chase is Brechin City, a team that Stenny have struggled against this season.
Their record against the Angus side is two defeats and one draw, but they’ll have to put that to the back of their minds come 3 p.m. on Saturday.
“We need to win our three remaining games, it’s as simple as that,” McGoldrick told Heraldsport.
“I’m confident if we can do that, then it’ll be enough for a play-off place.
“Dumbarton play Airdrie this Saturday, so something will have to give in that game.
“But we need to focus on our own job first and not worry about the teams around us.”
The Warriors’ win last weekend means there are now four teams chasing two play-off places.
Dumbarton and Airdrie enjoy four and three point advantages respectively over the Ochilview side and East Fife. Promotion via the play-offs would be a massive boost to any of the clubs, as would the two additional games, but McGoldrick is trying to not think too far ahead.
“We have to beat Brechin. Yes, we’ve struggled against them this season, but like ourselves, they have been inconsistent.
“The win against Dumbarton has given us a massive boost. The first half was as good as we’ve played all season. I think it’s fair to say that 2-0 at half-time flattered them.”
Goalkeeper Ally Brown will return to the squad, meaning that 18-year-old Dean Shaw is likely to drop to the bench despite impressing against the Sons.
“Dean had not even made the bench before Saturday but he impressed us with his composure and handling and certainly didn’t look out of his depth. Ally is back however so we have a wee bit of a selection dilemma.”
Former Hibs man Eric Paton will also be included after emerging unscathed last week.
